Are natural fibers better than synthetic ones?

Are natural fibers better than synthetic ones?

When you’re shopping for carpeting for your suburban Atlanta home, the subject of fiber will come up. Fiber is, after all, the foundation of this floor covering, the material that makes up the yarns.

Both natural and synthetic fibers are excellent choices that depend on your personal preference (and budget). Feel free to come into our carpet store to check out all the different fibers.

Wool: soft and luxurious

Those seeking natural, eco-friendly choices will love the lushness of wool. This fiber is durable and naturally resilient, meaning that it bounces back into shape after being compressed, say, by footsteps. Wool also has good soil resistance with tiny scales in its natural oils that flick away dirt.

Wool is somewhat absorbent, though, so blot spills right away, making it a natural humidifier. If you decide on wool, please use a carpet cleaner who is well experienced with this all-natural fiber. It's more expensive than a synthetic, but manufacturers are now combining it with acrylics to bring down the price.

Synthetics

Nylon accounts for over 50% of all carpets in the U.S. and is known for ultra strength and resiliency, making it ideal for floors in busy, highly foot trafficked rooms. This soft fiber also has good stain resistance, mainly when a protectant is used. So while you're in our carpet store, be sure to check out all our solution-dyed nylon, as it’s known for ultra stain-and-fading resistance.

Polyester is non-absorbent, so stain protection is inherent. It is, however, less resilient than nylon, making it ideal for moderately foot trafficked rooms. Olefin (polypropylene) is a budget-friendly fiber mainly associated with the Berber-style, a looped construction. Fibers always tend to be more durable when looped and not cut.

Triexta is relatively new to the market but already has a reputation for super-strength and permanent stain resistance built into the fiber. As a result, this fiber is often used in pet-and-kid-friendly carpets, where stain resistance becomes more important than ever.
